Interview with General Hospital's Kathleen Gati: Liesl Obrecht
> • How did you become introduced to General Hospital? Were you a fan of the show before you came on to play Dr Obrecht?
I auditioned for Mark Teschner 17 years ago, 14 years before I actually got the job. He had kept my material and also my monthly "news bulletins" I had sent him over the years. I watched very little television in general as I was always busy working or studying, so I can't say that I was a fan of the show, but I always felt a soap opera would be a good place for me!
> • What would you say to those who want to get in the acting field?
Study, study, study, and do LOTS of theater!!
> Do you have any words of advice for those who are more nervous on camera?I wish I did! I get very nervous still! But if I am very prepared then I can just concentrate on the work, even if I am nervous.
> • Who would you like to work with on General Hospital that you don’t get to work with as often?
I love working with Helena (Constance Towers). She is the consummate professional, and extremely kind! And I haven't worked with Genie Francis yet. That would be fun!!
> • What is your favorite storyline that you have been involved with?
I enjoyed working with my "kids" very much, especially Nathan, because as his mother, I can be more relaxed and smiling…instead of snarling so much! The same when I get to work with Franco (Roger Howarth). Dr. Obrecht likes him and smiles more around him! ;)
> • How do you prepare yourself for each show?
I study and study and study! I try the material different ways. I work on the accent. I run lines with my husband…and study and study and study. I can never be prepared enough. There are so many ways to play the material and develop the character. I'm kind of nutty about that!!
> Do you ever get nervous before filming?Always…when we rehearse I am smooth and reasonably calm then as soon as I hear "action" or in soaps "5-4-3-2…" I get excited and nervous! Don't ask me why!!!
> • You are a fabulous singer? Any chance a CD of your songs from GH, etc will come out?
Thank you for that nice compliment! There are a few songs of mine on iTunes (two from last year's Nurses Ball), Willkommen and Always On My Mind. Maybe more to come!
Thanks Anna!!
