My public speaking experience at the Point After Club

Last Thursday I spoke at a mini rally at the club I go to. I talked about the possible cuts to mental health services in Massachusetts. The Governor Deval Patrick wants to cut 3 million dollars from mental health services. I wrote a speech speaking out against the cuts. That was my first public speaking event since I spoke at my graduation at Landmark College. I was nervous but I got through it. I have really come out of my shell at the club. I didn't think after that awesome opportunity that I would then be asked to speak at my club's friends forum which was held today. I had my original speech from the mini rally that I wrote but instead of relying on my speech I wanted and made the decision to speak from the heart. There were a lot of people in attendance and again I was nervous. I used my usual nervous words: Like and umm... I was able to finish my recovery story pretty smoothly I thought but I wasn't sure what kind of reception I would get.

Once I was finished I got a round of applause, my friend Mike who is also a member of the club spoke after me. I stayed behind for a little bit before I went upstairs for a meeting. The housing director came upstairs and congratulated me on my speech. She gave me the fist bump and told me she was proud of me! I also got a nice compliment from my job coach and the director of the club. Today made me feel validated. Not that I haven't felt validated before today but today was a special day for me. I got to tell my story in front of a lot of people. I often don't get the chance to do that. I liked hearing my friend Mikes story as well. I feel so fortunate to be part of such a great place and to know so many courageous people. Thanks for reading my blog when you have the chance take the time and comment.
